Vibe Contents Analysis

Here is my analysis of a contents page from Vibe.

This is one of the contents pages from a Vibe magazine.

The first thing we can see from the image is the supposed model/singer, who is doing all she can to try and look sexy for the magazine, showing herself off. Wearing a short dress and high heels, she is portraying a classy woman, who is trying to use her looks to lure people in. With the use of lighting, hitting her from the front, where the picture was taken, this subtle light can be used to show her skin as glowing, which can make her look a little more glamorous. She is wearing some jewelry, which can be used to portray wealth, and also linked to the idea of her as being classy. Also, the way she has her legs vertical, at an angle can be seen as the letter 'V', where we can also see an outline in the background of the letter V – which stands for Vibe. The model could have done this as her way of symbolising Vibe magazine. To have the model cover most of the page, we can connotate that she is the main point/feature of this magazine, and that she will be the most important thing in it. The general theme for the whole image is black, grey and white, which this model is blending in with. She is wearing a dress similar to the colour of the background she is in, but as you get to the top part of the background, it fades to black, where the womans legs are, allowing her to stand out more.

The masthead, as we said before is in an outlined 'V' for Vibe, but where it says 'contents' is done in white, bold writing which drives the attention to the words contents instead of the 'V' for Vibe.

The word 'contents' is split up into 3 lines,
"CO
NTEN
TS".
This is a style often used by Vibe, to show their uniqueness and their 'fancy' magazine. Having the words contents written out this way gives Vibe a sleek style which can easily be recognised by other people as being Vibe. The word contents is bold and white against the black background, making the best contrast and allowing it to stand out more.

The actual contents itself are on the right side of the page, in the middle. Two different things are highlighted in bold - 'features' and 'fashion'. This is done to separate the list of contents, to make it easier for the reader to find what they are looking for. Under each topic is a little more general information, so the reader can have a little more information about what the topic is about, and who else is in it for example, which may be highlighted in bold to make it easier to read. The more important information will be in bold to attract the reader for the specific thing they are looking for, like the celebrities, so it saves them from having to read the whole text.
