Researching Music Magazines

Music Magazine Research

As part of my task, I will be looking at two music magazines, one called "Vibe" and one called "Billboard". The first part of this task is to get general information about these magazine companies, such as target audiences and how many magazines are sold etc.

Billboard's statistics

As we can see, Billboard's audience of male is 14% higher than of females, with male being 57% and females being 43%. The average age for the digital is 37, but with the real printed issues, the statistics are much different. The average reader is 47, and the percentage of males who read it are 77%, and the percentage of women who read it is 23%.

Vibe's statistics

Vibe, founded by Quincy Jones in 1933 is a very famous magazine, which due to the move in technology has ceased its paper production of printed magazines in 2009.

Vibe's move to the digital age has improved the way the company works and distributes its information. By having websites and apps, news, gossip, trends and other information can now be updated instantly, attracting more people and increasing popularity and can therefore increase profits due to more advertisements being seen.

Vibe's media kit also shows the average percentage of race that reads its magazines, which allows us to obtain more information about the companies who their work is read by.

Vibe also has some extra information that Billboard doesn't show, about the pages itself, such as colours and alignments of the writing/pictures and a few other things.

  1. Who publishes Billboard? Some comparisons of the two would help, but the information is clearly laid out.
